The 5 shoe styles you should have in your wardrobe this season

The key to effortless style is at your fingertips (or should that be at the tips of your toes?)

The right pair of shoes is the crucial finishing touch to set the tone of any outfit – you can easily dress up or down your look with just your footwear so understanding shoe styles is important. In order to do this though, you need to have the right footwear in your wardrobe.

We’ve all heard of the ‘staple’ pieces that should make up the modern man’s wardrobe, but how many of the key footwear items for the months ahead do you have? Did you know there are 5 key shoe styles every man should have for the autumn/winter season? If you’re thinking that sounds like too many, then read on and find out what you’re missing...

1. Black oxfords

A total classic, and a must for the contemporary man’s wardrobe, the black Oxford is an essential plain dress shoe style. Team with a smart suit and you’re ready for work, a job interview, a wedding, a funeral – the beauty of this shoe is its versatility. Look after them, and they’ll look after you.

2. Tan brogues

The smart shoe for denim lovers! You should have at least one pair of these, and as they’re available in so many colours (we’ve just listed tan as an example) they will be your go-to shoe for most occasions, including any upcoming Christmas parties (it’s never too early to start planning!) Team with slim cut jeans or chinos and show these shoes off. We love these Loake Foley shoes with contrasting blue laces for an unexpected pop of colour!

3. Loafers

Leave the laces at home with these slip on must haves. Choose from suede or leather, tassels or the penny loafer and mix up your shoe styles to inject some sophistication into your collection. These shoes are timeless, so if you don’t have a pair already in your wardrobe, you’ll be making a very sensible investment for the future of your feet.

4. Boots

When the weather changes you’ll be glad you invested in a pair of good quality boots. (And who’s to say you have to stop at just one pair?!) When choosing new boots, look for features like warmth, breathability, ankle support and comfort before deciding on the perfect pair for you. If you need some inspiration, you can’t go wrong with these.

5. Slippers

We snuck this one in at number five because we haven’t had too many gents admit to owning a pair of slippers – but we know the truth! It might conjure up the images of an old man with his pipe and slippers, but we’re sure a good few of you own a comfy pair for pottering around the house on a cold morning. Your secret’s safe with us!
