Best of Brogues

The origins of your brogues

Brogues were traditionally associated with working outdoors and were designed to be practical when faced with the elements. Even the now-stylish perforations on brogues were initially designed to drain water from them. What was once the shoe for the bog, is now the shoe for the boardroom and modern takes on this classic are as popular as ever.

Wear, not tear

Despite a switch towards pleasant aesthetics, modern brogues can be nice to look at and durable. That is definitely the case when it comes to Robinson’s stock, especially when discussing Robinson’s own brand or Barker Shoes. Both are handmade in the English shoemaking capital of Northamptonshire where, to this day, a mix of traditional and modern shoe making techniques are applied. Barker and Cheaney both use Goodyear welted soles and their shoes are made to last with a complete leather lining. The soles are rubber tipped to add the durability and delay the heel being worn down.

Professional, but never stuffy

Embracing the trends of 2018, Barker have released a colourful collection of brogues which are fit for work or play. The Barker Langley is a great example of the craftsmanship we’ve grown to expect from the Barker brand. The genuine leather shoe is dual-toned with shades of purple mixing with the hi-shine black. The perforated toe elegantly breaks up the black leather at the front while perforated lining behind divides the aubergine middle.

Another example of a great two-tone shoe is the Barker Lamport, which is available in 3 shades including a burgundy and black version. Like the Langley it is part of the current Professional collection from Barker and there’s no questioning it’s workwear credentials. For those of you who prefer a more subtle approach the shoe is available in a hi-shine black. To ensure your workwear stays in shape, Robinson’s are giving away a complementary cedarwood shoe tree, extra laces and a shoe horn with all Barker professional purchases. Out of office

Modern brogues can be great for a night on the town, as they can deliver on protection and style. The Benjamin Harrison, is a brogue boot by Robinson’s made by master shoe craftsmen at Cheaney. Made using completely English components, the Harrison boot is a testament to quality and durability. There’s no doubt this boot offers an ideal combination of style and practicality – what modern man’s wardrobe wouldn’t be improved with the addition of the Baker Harrison boots?

If you are seeking a smart casual shoe to wear out, the Barker Lazarus is equally stylish and fun. Available in 3 styles, including 2 suede offerings, this is the perfect summer 2018 brogue. Choose from the bitter chocolate or navy and blue shades. Both are perforated at the toe and heel. The lighter shades are mixed into the indents and the detailed finish is tremendous. The durable leather interior compensates for the soft suede on the outside, maintaining the shoe’s shape.
