Men's essential wardrobe maintenance for January

It’s the start of a new year and for many of us, it’s the perfect opportunity to start tackling a problem area, such as that cluttered wardrobe you’ve been avoiding all Christmas. January is the perfect month to start with a clean slate – so don’t put it off any longer. Start organising yourself with these top men’s essential wardrobe maintenance tasks for January and you’ll be well on your way to a year of looking effortlessly stylish.

Only clean clothes in your wardrobe

Time to ditch anything that looks like it has seen better days, including those white t-shirts that have started to discolour and the jeans with the mustard stain that just won’t come off. Anything that looks like it needs a wash should be quickly removed to the laundry pile, so that only clean and ironed clothes go back into the wardrobe. It’ll be a breath of fresh air when you go to find something to wear and it one of the easiest wardrobe maintenance essentials to do.

Polish your shoes

If you’ve read our other blogs, you’ll know that polishing your shoes is as much about protecting them as it is about making them look good. During the wet weather season it’s important to keep up a regular polishing routine, and there’s no better time to start than now. Read our blog on how to polish your shoes properly for our expert tips and advice to make this essential wardrobe maintenance element less of a chore.

Make do and mend

Is your favourite shirt missing a button? Are there a few loose threads appearing on that classic blazer? Now’s the time to set aside half an hour to protect and preserve your favourite wardrobe pieces with a bit of due diligence.

Get rid of wardrobe clutter

Time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Tackling the overflowing drawers and bursting-at-the-seams wardrobes are often the hardest part of your essential wardrobe maintenance as most people find this to be the most time consuming. It doesn’t have to be though, if you go with your gut feeling when deciding whether to keep an item or donate it to your local charity. Use the ‘have it worn it in a year’ question as a general rule of thumb if you’re still stuck on deciding what to do with it. The hard work involved in clearing out all that extra space will make you feel fantastic at the end, so the effort is well worth it.

Organise your wardrobe

Now that you’ve decided what to keep for the year ahead, make sure your wardrobe is organised properly so that it doesn’t end up in such a state again! You might choose to organise your wardrobe into sections for work and casualwear, or perhaps you’d prefer to organise your wardrobe contents by season – it’s really up to you.
